Wow! I was "Asleep" on this one, let's review the precursors;
  1) Large Sun Filament
  2) Massive Iceberg breaks off in Antarctica, indicating Southern Hemisphere effect
  3) Full Moon is When? yes, right now

8.8, and look at all those aftershocks!
I am putting more supplies on the Boat today, and getting more fuel for my New Generator.

Good links to watch cb, thanks!

Tsunami due in Hawaii around 4:00pm Eastern, estimated by AP article.  I hope they take this tsunami danger as seriously as they should.

From AP:

The first waves were expected to hit Hawaii after 11 a.m. (4 p.m. EST; 2100 GMT) and measure roughly 8 feet (2.5 meters) at Hilo. Officials evacuated people and boats near the water and closed shore-side Hilo International Airport.

Experts said tsunami waves could hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores as well as the U.S. West Coast and Alaska. In all, 53 nations and territories were subject to tsunami warnings.
...

Powerful aftershocks rattled Chile's coast _ 41 of them magnitude 5 or greater _ in the 10 hours after the quake. Six were sizable quakes in their own right, magnitude 6 or greater
...

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

Saturday's quake matched a 1906 temblor off the Ecuadorean coast as the seventh-strongest ever recorded in the world.

which means, if I am correct in my memory, that most of the world is focusing on the same subject - which should be of no surprise since most of the news today has been about the quake and possible following tsunamis.  AND of course another focus that most of the world would have in common at this point would be the Olympics.

This area is getting the bejeeziz rattled out of it.

M, those in the know say the high magnitude shocks will go on for WEEKS.

Unbelievable.  I have to go back and look at the details of the original quake....depth, etc.

But really, this one was more than volcanically incepted.  This was plate slip/strike.  Like a mid oceanic break almost.

7.2 Libertador Chile this am

Big ink is just starting on the live seismo graphs.

 http://aslwww.cr.usgs.gov/Seismic_Data/heli2.shtml

*****
Updated:  They've discounted this one down to 6.9 now  (going once, going twice...)  followed by 6.7, then 6 more large aftershakes within about 2 hours.

USGS held the ink on those live charts for the last 3 hours, and has just updated them now.

It seems there would have to be another large break point somewhere else soon, possibly C. America, Barbados area?  Just a feeling...never know.
