If you are interested in geology and tectonic plates, you should watch Neal Adams videos explaining an alternate view of planet growth.

His page with a selection of short video clips showing the growth of Earth, moons, Mars etc.

His main idea is that the Earth grows, fracturing the mantle and causing the tectonic plates to move apart.  Mountains and cracks appear because of the change in curvature of the original plates, just like would happen if you tried to flatten an orange peel.

His ideas are consistent with those of Dr. Paul LaViolette who proposes a theory of sub-quantum particles together with a brusselator type (autocatalytic)  mechanism which brings matter into existence.  His theory allows for matter to be created from this subquantum  sea preferentially in gravity wells, like the inside of planets and stars.
