Spain rocked by 2 earthquakes that kill at least 10
Michael Winter, USA TODAY

. . . . lines of cars crushed under tons of rubble from buildings not built for such shaking. A hospital was evacuated as a precaution.

The twin quakes struck about two hours apart. . . .  The rupture was quite shallow -- only about a half-mile deep, which compounded the damage . . . .   Spain has hundreds of earthquakes every year but most are too small to be noticed. . . . .

. . . .  close to the large fault line beneath the Mediterranean Sea where the European and African continents meet. . . .

Another shallow quake...glad there weren't more casualties.

Today was the day for the (years ago) psychically predicted quake in Italy, and apparently people were 'headin for the hills' there.   Kinda coincidental.

Spain earthquake: Rome earthquake rumour sparks mass exodus

As the earthquake hit Spain, one in five residents of Rome stayed off work and children were kept out of school over earthquake fears following a 1915 prediction by seismologist Raffaele Bendandi that "the big one" would strike on May 11, 2011.

REUTERSBy Barney Henderson 11:41PM BST 11 May 2011
Thousands of Romans fled the city and shops were shuttered over quake fears, despite officials insisting they cannot be predicted and special programmes running on Italian state TV calling for calm. . . .

Over 20 tremors did strike Italy on Wednesday, but it was in Spain, around 800 miles to the west, that a devastating quake struck.

Bendandi is said to have predicted several earthquakes which hit Italy during the last hundred years . . . .

Bendandi believed movement of plates and therefore earthquakes were the result of the combined movements of the planets, the moon and the sun and perfectly predictable.

That Guardian link is a good writeup on  Bendandi (correction on the psychic part hehe).

Noticed this morning that USGS has changed the depth on the first quake.

Now says:
MAP  4.5   2011/05/11 15:05:13    37.693    -1.673  0.0   SPAIN

Changed from 10 km to 0, so both were surface quakes, or close to it.

Nothing definitive to point to, but it is my perception that more shakers are originating closer to the surface.
