Okay....what the heck is going on here?  Quake depth at 3.1 miles, just offshore.

285 km (175 miles) SSW of MONTGOMERY, Alabama

The 3.1 mile depth indicates the quake took place in the bedrock (earth crust) in this area.  Many quakes register this depth.  This happens in Alaska...just offshore, in relatively shallow water, quite often.

But that area also sits on an active plate boundary....
