Strong Earthquake Hits Mount St. Helens
University Washington: ‘The Largest One We’ve Had in a While’

Monday, February 14, 2011 2:46 pm
By Adam Pearson apearson@chronline.com The Chronicle

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake hit Mount St. Helens at 10:35 a.m. today on the east side of Spirit Lake.. . .  the earthquake lasted maybe two seconds, shaking the building and windows, “and it was gone.”. . .  today’s earthquake was about 1,200 times more energetic than the 2.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in late January. Both were of the crustal variety, not magmatic, which includes volcanic activity. . . .   “It’s the largest one we’ve had in a while” Steele said.
Steele said this Valentine’s Day earthquake should serve as a reminder to residents and municipalities to be prepared for an earthquake of 6 magnitude — about 1,200 times more energetic than today’s — because “we know these earthquakes are going to be in our future.”

The largest, 5.4 quake, is pretty far south, but look at the timing between it and the two Calif quakes.

Big fish kill in King Harbor, Redondo Beach California.  So many anchovies and small fish were killed recently in King Harbor, that boats could not get past the masses of dead fish.
King Harbor, geographically is at the shallow end of a deep submarine Canyon, that extends past Catalina Island,  many things have happened recently, in the vicinity, including the purported Chinese Missile launch during rush hour a couple of months ago.
Methinks the fish kill may be an Earthquake precursor, there was a 3+ in northern Mexico the same day.
  Time will tell.

Ventura Coastline Closed After Oil Spill
http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-ventura-oil-spill,0,2641268.story

Oil spill is believe to be from ruptured pipeline caused by a landslide  sometime between 6:00 p.m. last night & this morning (per video).  The slip stretched over a mile along the coast.

So, tons of Anchovies killed and doing the dead fish float, O'fishul (bad pun alert) 'Splaining' says that a lack of Oxygen killed them all.
Why just Anchovies? doesn't king harbor also have Crabs, sea snails, bottom fish, small sharks and larger predator fish? Why all the same size?
Methinks someone tested something in the Harbor, something maybe from nearby TRW labs ( now Northrop Grumman)  It was TRW when I was living in Manhattan Beach several decades ago.
Not only that, but the breakwater is porous, and seawater is exchanged with every wave, and every change of tide, the water is always in motion.
And where are the Gulls? any other time they would be feasting on such a bounty, but I don't see any in the pics.
  Just thinking out loud.

I didn't even notice the lack of feasting.  Gulls will pilfer trash cans for snacks....where have they been at these big die offs?

Of note, the mass die offs have been very "selective"....

Good "catch" M.

FWIW, a couple of stories I saw specifically mentioned that the gulls had indeed gorged themselves, and were no longer feeding because they simply had gotten their fill.

Tsunami could help clear out dead fish in Redondo Beach
Andrew Blankstein and Mike Anton

Tsunami to the rescue?

That's what some in Redondo Beach are hoping. Work to remove tons of dead fish from the bottom of King Harbor was temporarily halted Friday morning in advance of the arrival of a tsunami sparked by the devastating earthquake in Japan.

"We are still trying to get rid of dead sardines. But we may take care of this naturally," said Leslie Page, general manager of the Redondo Beach Marina. "The water could come in and suck the fish out naturally."

Crews have been working throughout the week to remove a million or more fish that somehow found their way into the harbor and died from a lack of oxygen in the water.

What's left is slowly rotting on the harbor's bottom.
