Toyota suspends sales of eight models in recall

1-26-10
 7:42pm EST

DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp said on Tuesday it will suspend sales of eight models involved in a recall announced last week for potentially faulty accelerator pedals.

Toyota also said it would halt production at plants in the United States and Canada in the first week of February.

The sales suspension and recall includes Toyota's top-selling vehicle in North America, the Camry, for model years since 2007.

Also included are 2009-2010 model year RAV4, Corolla and Matrix; 2008-2010 model year Sequoia; 2007-2010 model year Tundra; 2005-2010 model year Avalon; and the 2010 model year Highlander.

Toyota is suspending production of these models for the first week of February at plants in North America. The plants are in Indiana, Texas, Kentucky, and in Ontario.

Production will be halted for the week of February 1 at plants that make the eight models involved in the recall. Two are in Indiana, with one each in Texas, Kentucky and Canada.

Bob Carter, Toyota U.S. group vice president, said the world's No. 1 automaker is taking the actions to ensure safety and restore confidence in Toyota among consumers.

"This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized," Carter said in a statement. "We're making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible."

Toyota adds new  Prius  to global recall list

 4:47am EST 2-9-10
By Nobuhiro Kubo and Chang-Ran Kim

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp said it is recalling nearly half a million of its flagship Prius and other hybrid cars for   braking problems   Embarrassed  as it seeks to address criticism over the handling of its worst safety crisis.

The world's largest automaker is under fire for two other recalls  Roll Eyes   covering more than 8 million vehicles worldwide due to problems with   slipping floormats and    sticky accelerator pedals.

It also faces a potential rush of litigation for crashes linked to those problems and blamed for 19 deaths and numerous injuries in the United States over the past decade.

Chastised by safety authorities and members of the Obama administration for moving too slowly on those recalls, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said he never believed the company was infallible, but it had always tried to repair defects swiftly.

"Let me assure everyone that we will redouble our commitment to quality as a lifeline of our company," Toyoda, the grandson of the company's founder, told a news conference in Tokyo.

"With myself taking the lead, and by keeping to the "genchi genbutsu" principle, all of us at Toyota will tackle the issue in close cooperation with dealers and suppliers together, we will do everything in our power to regain the confidence of our customers," he said, first in Japanese, then in English.

Genchi genbutsu, meaning "go and see," is one of the five principles invoked in Toyota's management and production philosophy -- one of the most studied and copied in the world.

GLOBAL RECALL

Toyota said it was recalling a total of 437,000 units of its 2010 Prius, Sai, Prius PHV (plug-in hybrid) and Lexus HS250h hybrids globally, including 155,000 in North America, 223,000 in Japan and 53,000 in Europe.

The latest model Prius is sold in some 60 countries and is a hugely important model for Toyota, which is betting on the hybrid to maintain its lead in low-emission vehicles. The Prius was Japan's top-selling car last year, a first for a hybrid.

"Toyota has been, beyond any doubt, the top player in the hybrid car segment, and the fact that Prius and other hybrid models will be part of this massive recall significantly dents its image," said Suh Sung-moon, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities in Seoul.

The fallout would likely help the likes of Korea's Hyundai Motor, which is set to launch its first hybrid model in the United States later this year, he added.

In an op-ed in the Washington Post, Toyoda said the company would communicate more with U.S. regulators including U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Toyoda, who is due to meet Japan's Transport Minister later on Tuesday, said he had heard of some cancellations of orders for hybrids affected by the recall. He said he was still waiting on a fix for his own Prius.

GLITCH FIXED

Some owners of the latest, third-generation Prius have complained that on bumpy roads and on ice, the regenerative brakes which help charge the vehicles' electric battery appear to slip and the car lurches forward before the traditional brakes engage.

Toyota has said it fixed a software glitch in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) on the 2010 Prius at the end of last month. An official at Japan's Transport Ministry said Toyota would halt sales of all other hybrid models in Japan until a fix was in place, likely in late-February or early March.

U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co said last week it would roll out a software patch for consumers to address similar problems with braking on two of its hybrid models, without filing a recall.

Nissan Motor Co, Japan's No.3 carmaker, said Toyota's woes had led it to focus more on winning customers' trust, as it posted a return to profit in the third quarter.

Shares in Toyota, which lost about a fifth of their value since late January, closed up 2.9 percent, while the Nikkei average dipped 0.2 percent.

"The shares fell while Toyota appeared not to be doing anything to deal with its problems," said Hiroaki Osakabe, a fund manager at Chibagin Asset Management. "But now, the fact they're taking concrete steps on the issue is being seen as positive."

Analysts were reluctant, however, to say Toyota shares couldn't fall further.

"I think it's still much too early to say all the bad news is out," said Norihiro Fujito, general manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities in Tokyo. "At least for now we're seeing short covering and buying on a sense that the share has been oversold."

LAWSUITS

In the apparent first of a potential rush of legal claims over the Prius, the owner of a 2010 model has sued Toyota in Los Angeles, claiming the automaker failed to fix a brake defect and seeking a court order requiring a recall.

Meanwhile, complaints to U.S. safety regulators about 2010 Prius brake problems have jumped sharply since the Transportation Department announced a formal investigation last week.

More bad news came when KBB, or Kelley Blue Book, said on Monday it plans to cut U.S. used-car values of recalled Toyotas by 1.5 percent "on concerns around the growing supply of unsold Toyotas on both dealer lots and at auctions."

Toyota faces further scrutiny on Wednesday when its North America chief executive, Yoshimi Inaba, testifies to Congress in front of the House Oversight Committee in Washington.

Transportation Secretary LaHood and NHTSA Administration Administrator David Strickland will also testify.

Honda  to Recall 437,763 Vehicles to   Repair Air Bags     (Update3)

By Alan Ohnsman and Tetsuya Komatsu

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japan’s second- largest automaker, will recall 437,763 vehicles globally to repair air bags that can deploy with too much pressure, adding to previous U.S. recalls for the same defect.

The expansion covers 378,758 vehicles in the U.S., Honda said in a statement late yesterday. The Tokyo-based carmaker will recall about 4,000 cars and minivans in Japan, it said in a filing to the nation’s Transport Ministry today.

The recall expansion heightens safety scrutiny of Japan’s largest automakers. Honda’s biggest competitor, Toyota Motor Corp., is working to reassure customers after recalling more than 8 million vehicles worldwide to fix problems linked to unintended acceleration and brake failures.

“Because of the Toyota recalls, Honda’s action is getting a lot of attention, but it’s not fundamentally a big deal,” said Mamoru Kato, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center in Nagoya, Japan. “Recalls are kind of an everyday thing.”

Honda fell 1.6 percent to close at 3,010 yen in Tokyo trading.

The company knows of one death and 12 incidents related to the air-bag defect, John Mendel, Honda’s U.S. executive vice president, said in a conference call. “The air bag produces excessive internal pressure, and there’s a risk of some metal shards coming through. That could cause injury.”

Takata Corp. Falls

U.S. vehicles to be repaired include some 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic cars, Odyssey minivans, CR-V sport-utility vehicles and 2002 Acura TL cars. An initial U.S. recall in November 2008 included 4,600 Accords and Civics, and another 440,000 of those cars and some Acura TLs were added in July.

In Japan, Honda is recalling Inspire and Saber cars and Lagreat minivans, the carmaker said in today’s filing. Mendel said some vehicles in Canada and other markets would also be affected by the action, without elaborating.

The air bags were made by Tokyo-based Takata Corp., according to Honda. Takata shares fell 4.3 percent, the biggest decline since Oct. 5, to 1,837 yen.

The recalls in Japan may cost Honda about 6,000 yen ($67) per vehicle, said Hideto Maehara, a spokesman for the carmaker in Tokyo. He declined to give an estimate for overseas recalls.

Honda’s U.S. operations are based in Torrance, California.

And here's another punch for Toyota.... bricks

I know these issues are important...safety of your vehicle is huge.

But I wonder why we aren't seeing "probes" and "investigations" for the fallacies of US automakers?  What about the "self destructive" (and repair money consuming) Ford flops?  What about the GM problems that have cost thousands of dollars to repair or replace...not to mention the injuries suffered by the owners of these autos?

Where was .gov then?....

By Julianne Pepitone, staff reporterFebruary 17, 2010: 7:26 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The U.S. will open an investigation Thursday to probe possible steering issues on about 500,000 Toyota Corollas.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official, about 363,000 Corollas from model year 2009 and 136,000 from 2010 could be affected.

The NHTSA will formally announce the probe Thursday, the official said. Calls to Toyota were not immediately returned.

As of last week, NHTSA said it had collected more than 80 complaints about steering problems in 2009 and 2010 Corollas.

Many of the complaints involve the car drifting at high speeds. Other owners complain of other issues including steering wheel vibrations or exaggerated motions from small steering inputs.

The Corolla is Toyota's second most popular model, after the Camry.

It's the latest in a spate of recent problems for Toyota (TM), which has recalled more than 8.1 million vehicles worldwide for issues including sticking accelerator pedals.

On Tuesday NHTSA demanded documents from Toyota to determine if the automaker conducted its recent recalls in a timely manner. Also, Toyota announced it would suspend production at two U.S. plants.

The automaker's reputation has felt the blow, as sales lag following the massive recalls.

Earlier Wednesday, in Japan, Toyota President Akio Toyoda addressed reporters for the third time in two weeks. He pledged tighter safety controls but said he will not appear before U.S. lawmakers at hearings to be held next week.

The Associated Press reported that at the Japan press conference, Toyota's executive in charge of quality controls said it was still uncertain if a Corolla recall was necessary, but that it was an option the company was considering. To top of page
