                                         Bonanza star Pernell Roberts dies

1-26-10
(UKPA) – 8 hours ago

Actor Pernell Roberts, who shocked Hollywood by leaving the TV Western Bonanza at the height of its popularity, then found fame again years later on Trapper John, MD, has died aged 81.

Roberts, the last surviving member of the classic Western's cast, died of cancer on Sunday at his Malibu home, his wife Eleanor Criswell told the Los Angeles Times.

Although he rocketed to fame in 1959 as Adam Cartwright, eldest son of a Nevada ranching family led by Lorne Greene's patriarchal Ben Cartwright, Roberts chafed at the limitations he felt his Bonanza character was given.

Roberts agreed to fulfil his six-year contract but refused to extend it, and when he left the series in 1965, his character was eliminated with the explanation that he had moved away.

Bonanza, with its three remaining stars, continued until 1973, making it second to Gunsmoke as the longest-running Western on TV.

For the next 14 years he mainly made appearances on TV shows and in miniseries, or toured with such theatrical productions as The King and I, Camelot and The Music Man.

Then, in 1979, he landed another series, Trapper John, MD, in which he played the title role.

The character, but little else, was spun off from the brilliant Korean War comedy-drama M-A-S-H, in which Wayne Rogers had played the offbeat Dr "Trapper" John McIntire opposite Alan Alda's Dr Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce.

Pernell Roberts Jr was born in 1928. After pursuing occupations that ranged from tombstone maker to railway riveter, he decided to become an actor.

Three of Roberts' marriages ended in divorce. His first, to Vera Mowry, produced a son, Jonathan, who died in 1989 aged 37.

                                          "Avatar" becomes highest-grossing movie

1-26-10
 4:51pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sci-fi spectacular "Avatar" has surpassed "Titanic" to become the highest-grossing movie worldwide, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Tuesday.

The worldwide total for the James Cameron movie stands at $1.859 billion after Monday's sales, beating the $1.843 billion haul racked up by "Titanic" in 1997-1998, said Greg Brilliant, spokesman for the News Corp-owned studio.

The data are not adjusted for inflation.

"Avatar" broke the seemingly insurmountable record set by "Titanic" in little over six weeks, handing Cameron the remarkable feat of directing the world's two biggest movies of all time.

It has reigned at the top of North American box office for six weeks. It has also led the field in France, China, Germany and Russia.

The action-adventure movie, starring Sigourney Weaver, is set in 2154 and tells the tale of a disabled ex-Marine sent to Earth to infiltrate a race of 10-foot (3-meter) blue aliens and persuade them to let his employer mine their homeland for natural resources.

The film took more than five years to make and was reportedly one of the most expensive films, with a budget of at least $300 million.

It has wowed both critics and fans, winning a Golden Globe last week. It is expected to garner an Oscar nomination next month.

'Catcher in the Rye' author J.D. Salinger dies

By HILLEL ITALIE
AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - "Catcher in the Rye" author J.D. Salinger has died at age 91 in New Hampshire.
The author's son, in a statement from the author's literary representative, says Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

"The Catcher in the Rye" with its immortal teenage protagonist—the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield—came out in 1951 during the time of anxious, Cold War conformity.

Salinger wrote for adults, but teenagers all over the world identified with the novel's themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy.

In later years, Salinger become famous for not wanting to be famous, refusing interviews.

                                        Legendary Author Eustace Mullins Passes

The Right Perspective
February 3, 2010

 Eustace Mullins: 1923 – 2010.

Legendary author of hundreds of books and pamphlets demolishing the lies of warmaking mainstream media, historian Eustace Mullins died Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the home of his caretaker in a small town in Texas.

Mullins, who would have been 87 in March, suffered a stroke three weeks ago in Columbus, Ohio. He had been on an extended tour of his admirers for much of the past year, visiting and chatting with many of his thousands of fans who jumped at the chance to buy his books from him in person.

The author of such incendiary books as “Secrets of the Federal Reserve,”
 “Murder by Injection,”
and “The Curse of Canaan,” Mullins was harrassed by the FBI for almost a half century, and had one of his books burned in Germany in the 1950s.
These stories are recounted in one of his books, “A Writ for Martyrs.”

A protege of the imprisoned patriotic poet Ezra Pound, Mullins compiled a well-researched corpus of works that detailed the passage down through time of a hereditary group of banker killers who have essentially ruled the world from behind the scenes since ancient times.

“Eustace Mullins was the greatest political historian of the 20th century, and not just because he was not beholden to the power structure that deters candid reports about significant events, but because, guided by the greatest poet of the 20th century who was imprisoned for broadcasting for peace, his meticulous research eventually uncovered virtually every political secret of the last 400 years,” said Internet essayist John Kaminski of Mullins’ passing.

“It’s a pity so many people are afraid to believe what Mullins told them, because it was much more of the truth than has ever been seen in our schools or our media,” Kaminski added.

Funeral arrangements and appropriate memorial information have yet to be released.

JK Rowling 'stole plot' for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,
                              High Court writ claims

JK Rowling has been accused in a High Court writ of stealing ideas from a children's book about a wizard published in the late 1980s for her novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

The millionairess author rarely comments on legal claims. But she said she was 'saddened that yet another claim has been made'.

The writ claims she took central ideas from The Adventures of Willy the Wizard No 1: Livid Land, a book published in 1987 by English author Adrian Jacobs, who died penniless a decade later.

Rowling said she would be applying to the court to have the case dismissed for being without merit, and criticised the claims as "not only unfounded but absurd".

Harry Potter: fans of JK Rowling series disappointed at preview of latest film Half-Blood PrinceCentral to the claim is that she took Jacobs' ideas including notably wizard colleges, wizards travelling on trains and a wizarding tournament.

All three are present in the Goblet of Fire, as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; the Hogwarts Express, and the Triwizarding Tournament..

Lawyers for Paul Allen, the sole trustee of Jacobs' estate, brought the original action against Rowling's UK publisher Bloomsbury last June.

Mr Allen said: "The estate – which acts independently of Adrian Jacobs' family – has been in correspondence with lawyers for Rowling and her publishers for several years but have been repeatedly rebuffed. We have taken expert legal advice and we believe we have very strong case."

He explained that Rowling had only now been added to the case due to the technicalities of the legal process.

"We have only joined JK Rowling to our lawsuit against Bloomsbury after discovering legal cause of action against her within the last six years.

"Previously we were advised we were 'out of time' to bring an action against JK Rowling herself as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published in the year 2000."

Nick Tidnam, the artist who was commissioned by Jacobs to illustrate his book, said he did not realise the alleged parallels between the two until they were pointed out to him.

The millionairess author, who rarely comments on legal claims made against her Harry Potter books, responded: "I am saddened that yet another claim has been made that I have taken material from another source to write Harry.

''The fact is I had never heard of the author or the book before the first accusation by those connected to the author's estate in 2004; I have certainly never read the book.''

She continued: ''The claims that are made are not only unfounded but absurd and I am disappointed that I, and my UK publisher Bloomsbury, are put in a position to have to defend ourselves.

''We will be applying to the court immediately for a ruling that the claim is without merit and should therefore be dismissed without delay.''

Jacobs failed to find a commercial publisher and paid for 5,000 copies of the 36-page book to be published in 1987.

He suffered a stroke later that year and was declared bankrupt in 1991. He died in a London hospice in 1997.

The legal claim first surfaced in 2004, by solicitors acting for Jacobs' only son Jonathan.

Osmond son commits suicide by jumping from building candle2

 4:53pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The teenage son of singer Marie Osmond killed himself by jumping from a building in downtown Los Angeles, celebrity news television program "Entertainment Tonight" reported on Saturday.

"ET" said Michael Blosil, 18, leapt from his apartment around 9 p.m. (0500 GMT) Friday after leaving a note saying he intended to kill himself due to a long battle with depression that made him feel as if he had no friends.

The report on ET's website quotes Marie Osmond as saying, "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time."

A representative for Osmond could not immediately be reached for confirmation.

A Los Angeles police spokesman said a suicide occurred Friday night in the area between 9 and 10 p.m., but the victim's name and details had not been released.

Marie Osmond is a member of the Osmond family of singers that rose to fame in the 1970s. Marie and her brother Donny hosted a hit TV variety show, which featured appearances by their seven brothers. The Osmond Brothers and Donny and Marie also recorded several hit singles.

More recently, Marie Osmond appeared on the popular TV show "Dancing With the Stars," and she and Donny are currently headlining a Las Vegas show.

So, Fess Parker is now gone, regards to the Family.
What is not being said, is that Mr. Parker followed Bob Hope's advice, and following Fess and Bob's advice, arnold Schwarzenegger did the same thing.
Earn your money in Hollywood, and invest it in Real Estate.
That worked in those days, Mr. Parker bought every, and I do mean every piece of rental real estate in Santa Barbara, in the 60's and 70's, and bled all the renters dry, ( I was one of them) He was not a slumlord, but he put very little money back into his properties, you could see them two blocks away, from there he bought properties in Solvang, and the Santa Ynez Valley, along with the Firestone Tire family, they established Wineries and put their children to work in them, ( nice work if you can get it, no bank loans, and you can never get fired).
